Tomorrow, we begin our speeches. Well, at least we do in period 1.
You should have the written version of your speech on the day you are set to go.
The rubric can be found here.

What we did today...and tomorrow.
If you weren't in class today, we watched the first 5:33 of this Steve Jobs video. We journaled about what was good and bad about it.
We also learned four new terms: allusion, alliteration, apostrophe, and imagery. We looked for these in our lyrics, so you should do this, too. I should have the whole dictionary finalized by Friday.
Tomorrow, you will work in-class on your narrative speeches. Just follow the directions. You'll be fine.
See you Friday for some speech-editing and logging.

Analysis is for the birds
Today, we started our song lyric analysis.
We filled out a blank reading log with our lyrics, the device we found, and tried very hard to explain WHY. I mean, most of us did. Some of us just sat there. Finishing the log is homework.
There is a link to the blank log on the side. There is also a sample log done for you here, if you want to see how it should be done. I only did three devices, though...and you need four.

Where do we go...from here??
To answer a question many of you have posed: What's next?
Well, tomorrow we will finish up our works cited; you will resubmit your essays this weekend.
We will also begin a quick pair project--it involves literary devices and song lyrics. It is the beginning of us really looking at literature like an author, instead of from our comfortable, well-worn seats as readers.
We will begin that tomorrow in class, but you are primarily on your own to get it done for Monday.
Teams will be assigned a literary term, and they will have to "teach" it to class when their time comes...and that time is whenever I feel like it: )
Seriously, though, you will publish your definition and examples for us all to follow by Monday morning. We are essentially creating a class dictionary that will be a reference for the remainder of the year. With it, we will spend hours doing fun things like logging our reading and figuring out not only what "text says," but also what "text does." Oh, the good times we have in English.
Next week, while analyzing, we will also begin to look at narrative writing. We will craft the narratives that will become our speeches.
Woo-hoo!!

Tragedy and Regular Peeps
This weekend, a few requests(AKA, homework).
1. Rework your essay, using suggestions from your partner. Clean copy for Monday.
2. Read "Tragedy and the Common Man" by Arthur Miller. No, it's not easy, but it's an important article by a renowned playwright who took what the Greeks gave us and made it modern. Annotate, annotate, annotate.
Journals due Tuesday: )
Enjoy the weekend and hopefully, I'll see at 1PM at the Creek!

Tonight...just a sentence
Please choose your REAL topic, and decide which point you would like to "Take a Stand" with. You should come in tomorrow with that topic chosen and the first sentence ready to be shared with the class.
I'll have mine, too. I look forward to seeing them: )

Writing modes
Read about the different types of writing.
Choose a topic you could write about:childhood, Barbies, soccer, love, Modern Family...anything you like.
For each type of writing, think of 3 writing ideas. We will practice these writing modes this year, using some of the topics you brainstormed.
One about football is here.Click it!

Preparation is Key
Here's the rundown of our week:
Tues: Guidance visit
Wed: Speak final chapters discussion/sentences for HW
Thurs: Samples on blog by END of day; study for quiz, Speak analysis/JOURNALS DUE
Fri: Vocab Unit 3 quiz
Next week, your project is due, we will watch the movie and take the test, and PSATs are happening.
Believe me when I say this is a bit of a blessing. The best way to conquer a massive test like SAT is to practice, practice, practice.
If you would like to be ahead of the game, I'm sharing this link to Khan Academy. Make an account and try some questions. We will be practicing/I will be giving tips this week and next.

The End of Things
I hate endings. The ending of Speak means the movie with Kristin Stewart mouth-breathing, a project, and a test. Oh, and more vocab.
All the stuff you need is on the right. We are going to spend next week discussing the finer points of the book, looking deeper at certain sections, and getting ready for a test.
Enjoy your weekend, and remember:

The hard part
The worst part of Speak is facing the subject matter. I'm asking that everyone read this article before class on Wednesday. I'll have paper copies tomorrow, but feel free to read it online now.
It's an article about rape, the legacy of the Brock Turner case, and how rare it is that a rape victim speaks up.
We will discuss.

Downloading Speak...shhh...don't tell anyone.
There are a couple of options here.
Click the link on the right. You should get a .pdf file. If you're on a tablet or phone, you may have to selection "view web version" before you can see the links.
Once you click on it, download it if you are using a computer.
If on your phone/tablet, save it somewhere. Here's what my iphone looks like when I click it:

I just open in iBooks and go.
Read through page 12 for tonight's homework. Calendars are in the works. And no worries...our reading will pick up tomorrow.

Your letter to moi
Due FRIDAY:
A letter to Mrs. Rock. Isn't letter writing a dying art?
Your letter should do two things: it should tell me about you and it should make me aware of your expectations.
You can tell me about anything: your likes, dislikes, favorites, least-favorites, hopes, dreams, goals. I like to know about you.
Your expectations may be ones you have for me, English class, this year, or even Oakcrest.
It should be one full page typed or handwritten. Typed letters should be double-spaced and may be submitted to me via email.
See you tomorrow!
