TLP Essay
Remember, TLP Planet Project is due on Monday.
The author of, “The Big Lesson of The Little Prince” says, “we lose sight of the effortless ability to take in the world in full. The very experience that helps us become successful threatens to limit our imagination and our sense of the possible.” This is exemplified by the text of TLP. It is also true that if we think back to childhood, our memories are child-like. Our adulthood is stripped away, and we revert to our perhaps truer self.
You are going to write a narrative essay. It should be a recollection of some aspect of childhood: a memory, a person, a class, a parent, a creative high, your childhood home. You are restricted by only one thing: you must write it in the voice of younger you. The memory must feel like a child has written it. It should include the details a child would remember, the feelings, and the thoughts.
Minimum word count: 500
Points: 50
Due date: Wednesday, February 15th by 11:59PM

Read this article
There was a very interesting set of articles published in the NYTimes a few years ago. For homework, you are going to read Part I, found here.
You are also going to make a list of 10 things you learned about or surprised you about the article.
Don't be offended by the title; it's meant to engage.

Biomed peeps..and anyone else
Here's what we did Friday in class:
Journal: Go back to 1/3/17 and reflect.
We discussed the rest of The Little Prince questions.
We read TLP through chapter 7. You can catch up on the side; I posted a link to the whole book.
Your homework:
You are going to write a 2 paragraph blurb about a friend. (This should be someone you actually like). You should describe them AND describe why you like them, but you cannot use facts.
As the Little Prince himself says: "When you tell them you have made a new friend, they never ask you any questions about essential matters. They never say to you, 'What does his voice sound like?' 'What game does he love best?' 'Does he collect butterflies?'"
Basically, The Little Prince recognizes that we care more about the "facts" than we do the essential part of humans. You should describe your friend AND why you like them, but may only discuss the essential parts.

Things I don't know...
This weekend, you have a big task.
You must choose something from popular culture that you know NOTHING about. You will write a 400 word or more essay, expressing, like Chuck Klosterman in this article, why you know nothing and why you don't care you know nothing.
You should write in the style of your chosen author. If that author is a poet or songwriter, you may write a shorter version of this assignment.
The whole point is not perfection; it is to try a different style, and by doing so, understand your own style more.
Oh, and here is mine.
Good luck!

Slam Poetry
Yesterday and today, we viewed some slam poetry that is pretty popular.
We also decided that the differences between traditional poetry and slam poetry are:
-rawer emotion
-more "performance" and character
-more emotion
-audience participation
-topics we connect with
-political and social commentary
-the intention of being read aloud
-often memorized
Here are the links to the videos:
